The Vision
The idea for a hospice in the Eastern Bays developed from the sesqui-centennial celebrations, when it was perceived there was a need for the provision of quality care for the terminally ill in closer proximity than St Joseph's Mercy, who operated from Mt Eden at that time.
Action
In the November of 1989 an early celebration event was held, a garden competition and at the prize giving the seed was sown for the first fundraising towards the hospice; so on a Sunday afternoon two weeks later the gardens were opened for viewing by the public for a small donation. Surely there was no lovelier way to begin, than through a garden.
The Establishment
In 1992 four people were appointed to forward the hospice plan and became the founder trustees on the establishment of the Eastern Bays Hospice Trust. Two of those founding members remain on the Board today – Isabella Tedcastle and Time Willis.Public meetings followed and volunteer training was undertaken.
First Home
The original contact centre, began in an office generously made available in St Heliers. Then in 1994 we moved to a room at the Adventist Hospital in St Heliers Bay Rd ( now Grace Joel). This too was made available free of charge.

By the late 1990's it was decided a purpose built building was needed, for day stay and overnight care. The search was on for a suitable site.... Dr Stuart Brown, a local GP and EBH trustee, was instrumental in negotiating an arrangement with St Andrews' Village making available land at a 'peppercorn' lease.
In August 1999 the Hospice Building was officially opened. Many volunteers, service, clubs, trusts and contacts contributed to the completion of a well appointed hospice from which to reach out into the community.

The Service
Toward the end of 2000, it was felt that the building and service was not being utilised to its full extent. The Board at that time, approached St Joseph's Mercy Hospice for advice and expertise.
From the beginning of 2001 in response to the community's needs, it was very evident that there needed to be a shift in focus and what emerged was what we have today ie. An expansive day programme within dove house and the availability of 24hr care.
